Would having a custom made wedding gown be cheaper then buying one?

Has anyone done this? I saw a wedding show where a couple with an extremely tight budget had her dress custom made by a local tailor and considering their budget I thought it was maybe cheaper that way. I know it depends on the detail of the dress, location, and the reputattion of the seamstress but I mean generally, which would cost more.

I think that custom made is often cheaper. There are lots of people in your local area (google search) that would be good seamstresses. Some of them have websites and pictures of dresses that they can make. These may not be very fancy wedding dresses but more simple and elegant. Or you could go the ebay and/or china route – that is definately cheaper.

The other reason I think it can work out cheaper (unless you find a dress on sale) is that retail is usually heavily overpriced and often you will have to get it altered anyway – at an additional cost to you. So you may as well go custom made from the beginning.
